Mental Health Inpatient Unit (Ward 5A)

Who we are

The Mental Health Inpatient Unit on Ward 5A at PCH is the state-wide assessment and treatment facility for children and young people up to 16 years old with complex and acute mental health issues.

It is part of a broader continuum of mental health care available to young people through the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (external link).

Services we provide

Ward 5A is a recovery focused patient and family centred service. It offers a seven-day multidisciplinary program in a safe environment for voluntary and involuntary patients as authorised under the Mental Health Act (2014).

Our clinicians aim to empower families to participate in their child’s treatment and assist their recovery by providing information, education and support.

The unit offers short term assessment, brief intervention and therapeutic group programs, depending on your child’s needs. We also work closely with agencies in the community, from the time your child is admitted until they are discharged, to ensure their care is consistent and can be maintained when they return home.

Ward 5A has a total of 20 beds and is divided into two sections:

  • A 14-bed acute section for children and adolescents who require a higher level of assessment, monitoring and treatment
  • A low-acuity section with 6 beds for those who require less support and supervision during their treatment and recovery.

The service is staffed by experienced mental health professionals including nurses, psychiatrists, psychologists, occupational therapists, social workers, an aboriginal liaison officer and education staff.

Referrals

We accept referrals from therapists, specialists, GPs, schools and other community organisations.
