What is Telehealth?

Telehealth is the use of telecommunication technologies that bridge the distance between consumers and health workers. It’s a way in which services are delivered and aims to provide:

  • Equity of access to care for patients living in rural, remote and outer metro areas
  • Reliable support for clinicians (including GPs and nurses) working in rural and remote areas
  • Linkages with key organisations in order to improve health and community outcomes, particularly Aboriginal Health
  • A standard clinical handover tool for transfer of patient care to other sites, to demonstrate the patient’s physical or mental capacity and/or the planned therapy program to the transferring service.

The direction of Telehealth is to improve access and efficiency of health services delivered across all environments (hospitals, community and home), based on population needs now and into the future.

What is Videoconferencing?

An alternative to the use of a dedicated, hardware-based videoconference unit and software. This will allow a patient to be seen in their own home via the use of a computer, tablet device or smart phone.

Benefits and limitations

A videoconferencing system can provide access to capabilities similar to a dedicated hardware videoconference (VC) unit. It can run on a personal computer, laptop and portable devices. It is a flexible, accessible and cost-effective videoconferencing option.

The same clinical requirements apply to all patient appointments whether conducted by VC or face-to-face. It is essential that the privacy and confidentially of clinical VC events are maintained e.g. use of appropriate venues and technical security.

Operating Hours

Normal operating hours are Monday to Friday between 7:30am and 5:00pm.

Selected facilities are available outside these hours and are subject to sufficient prior notice being given, however limited audio visual support may be available.
